How to Validate My NIN

How to Validate My NIN? – NIN validation and NIN verification may seem similar but refer to distinct processes when dealing with the Nigerian National Identification Number (NIN). NIN verification involves confirming that a particular NIN belongs to the person presenting it. This is usually done to verify the identity of someone using their NIN. During verification, details linked to the NIN, such as name, date of birth, and biometric data, are cross-checked against the records in the National Identity Database.

However: NIN validation involves confirming that the NIN is correct, valid, and active in the National Identity Database. This ensures that the number was properly issued and is not fake, expired, or inactive. During validation, the NIN itself is checked for accuracy and consistency against the NIMC records to confirm its legitimacy. This process focuses more on the integrity of the NIN as a valid identifier.

How to Validate My NIN

To validate your National Identification Number (NIN), you can follow these steps, using either online, USSD, or in-person methods. Here’s how to do it:

1. Using USSD Code

If you’re in Nigeria, the simplest way to validate your NIN is by using the USSD code:

  • Dial *346# on your mobile phone.
  • Follow the prompts to either retrieve or validate your NIN.
  • The system will check your NIN status and display a confirmation message, indicating whether the NIN is valid and active.
  • A small fee may apply for this service, depending on your telecom network.

2. Using the NIMC Mobile App

You can validate your NIN using the NIMC Mobile App:

  • Download the NIMC Mobile App: Available on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  • Login using your NIN, name, and phone number.
  • Once logged in, your NIN status will be displayed. If your NIN is valid, it will be shown as “active” in the app.
  • The app also allows you to generate a Virtual NIN (vNIN), which can be used for identity validation.

3. Online Validation (NIMC Portal)

You can check your NIN’s status through the NIMC Pre-Enrolment Portal:

  • Visit the NIMC Pre-Enrolment Portal.
  • Navigate to the NIN Verification/Validation section.
  • Input your NIN and other required details, such as your name and date of birth.
  • The portal will check if your NIN is valid and correctly linked to your identity.

4. In-Person at NIMC Centers

  • If you are unable to use digital methods, you can visit any authorized NIMC Enrollment Center or a Nigerian Immigration Office.
  • Provide your NIN and other required documents (such as a valid ID or birth certificate).
  • The staff will check the status of your NIN and confirm whether it is valid and active.

5. Through Third-Party Platforms (Banks/Service Providers)

Some banks e.g: UBA and Polaris Bank and service providers offer NIN validation services when linking your NIN to their services:

  • For example, when opening a bank account or registering a SIM card, the bank or telecom operator may validate your NIN on your behalf as part of the Know Your Customer (KYC) process.
  • You can also request a NIN validation confirmation from them.

What to Do If Your NIN is Not Valid:

  • If you encounter an issue with your NIN validation, such as it not being recognized or marked invalid, visit an NIMC office to resolve it.
  • In some cases, your NIN might need to be updated or corrected due to data errors.

Am still yet to get a verification/validation on same as the change has not reflected, but was issued a preview of same afterwards without the actual print out. Excuse was that they couldn’t print due server problem or so. Then we snapped the preview and left. All I did was change of surname with all other info valid.
